JUDGE & JEALOUSY

As we returned to the hotel, Darcy insisted that we each take some time to rest and go down to dine together in an hour.

When we reached his room again, Jane was content to give us a whole minute this time, under her perpetual excuse of protecting me from encountering any eight-legged creatures. Once the door was closed, I turned to Mr. Darcy, about to compliment him for how he stood by me as a united front in Lydia’s case, when I saw him look on me with unmistakable rage. With a swiftness that I never knew he possessed, he grabbed my arm, pulled me into his room, and closed the door behind us.

“You have bested me this time,” I gasped, breathing in heavily. “I was not even given a chance to put up a fight.”

“Because I am not amused.” He wielded on me with a fury. “Elizabeth, how could you?”

“How could I? What are you referring to?”

“You let Mr. Wickham talk to you? How could you!”

“I did not mean to. He approached me!”

“Then you should have ignored him!”

“Sometimes by doing so, it exposes us to looking rude. Would you like me to cause such an image?”

“I do not care what it looks like. How could you hurt me like that?”

This outburst was so random and took me by surprise that I could not censor my reactions.

“I never hurt you! And in what way could you even have deduced that? I confronted him about his lack of shame in addressing me when Georgiana was right there. I forced him to confront his horrible behavior to you and your sister, I promised that I would relay his apologies to her, and I told him of our engagement.”

Despite saying this, it was as if I had not, because Darcy only remained angry as he moved away from me.

“Do you still love him?” he asked me.
